In the midst of tension over the territorial dispute over the West Philippines Sea, formerly known as South China Sea, and growing ties of Philippines and China, banners with statement “Welcome to the Philippines, Province of China” hung in several footbridges in Quezon City and Makati City.
The banners came out amid the growing ties of Philippines under President Rodrigo Duterte and the government of China, which received huge criticisms from leftist, anti-Duterte groups. The banners came also amid the 2nd year celebration for the Manila wins over China in the arbitration case last 2016.
It can be remembered that the huge issue governing the two nations were due to the territorial claims over South China Sea, where China abruptly claimed the whole area with their 9-dash line.
The issue brought by the Philippines under former President Benigno Aquino III to the International Court Arbitration of The Hague, which latter decided to favor the Philippines in the cases last July 12, 2016.
As of posting, the banners are still hang over the said parts of the capital and still no one claims over posting of the controversial bannerettes.
