A pregnant 12-year-old girl confirmed by Chinese authorities in Eastern China that she had been abducted from Vietnam and sold as a bride to a 35-year-old man by a woman who said she had adopted the girl.
A statement released by The People’s Procuratorate of Xuzhou, Jiangsu province WeChat page confirmed the status of the girl, where the case was widely reported by mainland China after the hospital had her obstetric examination and contacted local police after learning of her age. The statement added that the case would be handled by the procuratorial department for minors.
The report said, that the girl, named Lan Lan, said that she was abducted by two Vietnamese and taken to Henan province in 2014, after which she ended up in Xuzhou and was “adopted” by a woman there.
The statement said, the woman introduced the girl to a 35-year old man to be his “wife” for 30,000 yuan (HK$34,755) as “betrothal gifts”. The two lived together and the girl conceived. Lan Lan is currently three months pregnant.
The statement said, the local public security bureau arrested both the man and the woman and is under investigation.
It is said that men in southern parts of China have long history of purchasing “foreign brides” especially from Vietnam, as men are relatively poor and have difficulty finding brides.
